if you're struggling to do so, try to catch them right on your peak where you have the most power, not exactly through ur shoulders alone since they have no power. position for a good wave paddle and paddle as hard as you can, facing the beach. look back to make sure you're catching it. go straight and get used to the board you'r using before u even make a turn,.

Learn the peaks of your break, and hang out near them. Learn to position yourself as close to the initial breaking part of the wave as you feel comfortable dropping in on. If you shortboard, you'll need to be within a very critical zone to be able to catch the wave, on a longboard, the zone is larger.
If you watch the locals at your break, you will see them sitting in a particular spot, and after catching a wave, returning close to that spot. This is usually the optimal place to catch the wave.
Keep an eye on tidal conditions. Some breaks work well with a high or low tide, some suck at high or low tide. Get to know what works best at your break. Someday you'll thank me for this tid bit.

A bad day surfing is better than a good day working

Here's what I do Surfboi.. You may want to give these a shot:
a. Watch closely for the waves that are coming and Choose a wave that isn't broken yet.
b. As that surfing wave comes, paddle faster. As it picks u up, apply as much paddling energy as you can.
c. Stay away from broken surfing waves. Just sit on your board & wait til a good one comes before you head on.
