i was in a very good shape when i started to surf a couple of years ago. but still, after paddling a little bit, the back of my shoulders seem to be killing me in pain & i need to rest for long days bcoz i feel like i cannot paddle any longer! i wonder if this is normal?? i once hurt my rotator cuffs few years ago & i nver went to the doctor for check-up afterwards. this might be the reason why. what do you think?

you know, it doesn't really matter what exercise you've done.. paddling will still make anyone sore when you start surfing or when you haven't surfed for a while.. that's because it uses different muscles that aren't used to functioning that way.. just paddle more! that's what i learned!

To me, your problem sounds like a muscle fatigue..Stick with it, the pain's normal but your muscles would get stronger eventually. If you go to the gym, do some lateral pull downs, that should help.. Also, don't forget to warm up & make sure you stretch on a regular basis. exercise that part of your shoulder by squeezing your shoulder blades together....

remember to work on the muscles specific to surfing bcz that might help your pain.. what you need right now is core strength & maybe, an arm movement endurance...

You might force yourself the first couple of times you surf. Even though you’re perfectly fit, still, probably your body wasn't immediately able to adjust to the physical activity required in surfing, that's why you are having that muscle pain.

That happened to me the first three times when I started surfing, I had a full body massage every weekend and it helps to lessen the pain until eventually, my body was able to adjust every time I surf.

Beach is where I find my self most of the time.

If it just feels like a sore muscle, work it and it will improve. If you've had rotator cuff problems, keep a weather eye on that. It's a common injury among surfers.

A bad day surfing is better than a good day working

Most surfers usually forget to take a warm up, thus feeling shoulder pain! The best remedy for that is to do some good stretching before actually hitting the surfing waves. And get some strengthening programs too. That can help you alot when it comes to stabily and flexibility in the water. Eventually, you'll be able to get rid of those muscle pains & injuries..
