It's perfectly possible to surf on 2-3ft waves. Be sure you're riding on the right board (a long board or a foam board). It's easier to stand if you're moving faster but never expect to just pop-up like the experts do. it takes time & practice, they say..

When the wind is offshore, meaning it comes from the land going to the sea, it creates barrels & it boosts wave heights. If it is onshore, it comes from the other side & it flattens the waves..

A glass wave, literally, looks like a glass. They usually happen when there's no wind..

for me, it's possible to start surfing in a wave that's big enough that it can push me and i can catch it. also small enough that it wont scare me that much! and the first time i surfed, i did it in whitewater!

depends on the white water though. if it pumps out back, for 4ft & above, wait & do not paddle out first.

I started surfing on a 6 to 8-inch wave. But actually, 1.5 ft waves are enough for a short board to surf on as long as they are clean. on a long board, you could even ride smaller waves. and with foam boards, you can actually ride ankle-high waves!

i was taught before that a wave about the size of a surfer's leg is just enough for every beginner to practice on.

If a whitewater is any bigger that 4 inches, then i can catch it. but i really cannot stand on it, i only lay flat..on a shortboard!

For longboard, i can ride 10 inches or less. You have to move close to the wave speed & u have to position urself on the board & flatten it up or trim it.

And besides, whitewater can always push anyone a bit even with a little forward motion. Again, only if you're positioned properly on the board.

Look at the wind & see if the waves are coming ur way. The good winds & waves in the middle of the ocean pointing at your direction are very very good to surf in. and besides, u should be able to tell from the shape of the surfing wave if it's surf-able. go down during low tide so u can have a better view of whatever stays underneath the surface!

if you are still not sure about the waves, then maybe you still don't have enough experience to go surfing on your own. Because if u do, then you should know what lies under the water and the board you'll need to go out with. Anyone, you can just ask anyone who have tried that particular surfing camp or spot where u plan to go.Or bring someone along so if u ever end up doing something wrong, they'd be there to help you out.

If you're not in a hurry, you can wait for a flat day & go for a longboard surfing. Then you jsut check the intimate details then.

But generally, just PADDLE OUT & surf!! That's more fun, right? Because it's always worth a try!

when I started surfing, I started in a flat day, just like what you are saying. then eventually, I was already trying to catch the waves around me and there. but I haven't really tried surfing in very high waves yet.

Beach is where I find my self most of the time.
