Surfing Maneuvers - Backside Bottom Turn

Surfing Maneuvers - Backside Bottom Turn As with all other backhand versions of Surfing Maneuvers, the Backside Bottom Turn is more difficult to do than its frontside counterpart. This also requires correct timing, proper weight placement and distribution, and speed. If done correctly, the Backside Bottom Turn will generate the amount of speed that you need in your next maneuvers and at the same time, it will improve your performance when doing different moves on the waves. Learn some tips on how to do the Backside Bottom Turn in this section:

  1. Catch a wave, get to your feet, and ride down its face with as much speed as possible.

  2. As you come to the flats, bend your knees and put pressure on the inside rail (heel side) and rear foot. Do not put too much pressure on the inside rail, otherwise you will lose your speed or fall off your Surfing Board.

  3. Move your body towards the lip so you will see where you are headed. Use your arms for balance as you turn.

  4. Shift your weight to your rear foot to gain speed as you move towards the face of the wave.

The Bottom Turn (frontside and backside) sets the speed and fluidity for other various maneuvers. It is an essential part of Surfing so make sure to learn how to do it the right way. Notice how speed, weight transfer, and timing all work together to have a smooth turn, whether it is frontside or backside. Go out into the water and practice. Mastering the Bottom Turn will really help when you progress to other maneuvers.
