Surfing Maneuvers - Backside Floater
Just like in the Frontside Floater, the Backside Floater can be done to finish a ride when the wave is closing out or to set the pace for your next move. It also involves three important phases that you should be aware off: lip entry, riding the lip, and wave re-entry. This maneuver is a series of movements, so it is essential to get each phase right. Here are some tips on how to do a Backside Floater successfully:
- Catch a wave. With as much speed as possible, initiate a Backside Bottom Turn at an angle and in the middle of the wave.
- Direct your Surfboard towards the lip.
- As you reach the top of the lip, shift your weight from heel side to toe side. Do not lean too far to avoid falling off your board.
- Do not wait until you lose your speed or the wave is about to break. Spot your landing and be ready to ride down.
- Come off the lip. Bend your knees to absorb the impact of landing on the flats.
When doing a Backside Floater, make sure to generate speed as your ride the face of the wave and do a solid Bottom Turn. As your ride the lip and you begin to lose speed, prepare for landing and re-enter the face of the wave. Get this right and you will be able to do other maneuvers with ease.
