Surfing Maneuvers - Backside Turn
If you are riding a wave with your back to it, you are surfing backside. After learning how to turn frontside, you will now learn how to turn with the wave at your back. In Surfing, a Backside Turn is more difficult to execute than a Frontside Turn, since you need to look over your shoulder to see the wave. In this maneuver, it is crucial to know the right time to shift your weight and how to maintain your balance. Here are some pointers when doing a Backside Turn:
- Catch the wave.
- Shift your weight to your power (rear) foot, to the inside rail so that the nose of the board will move upward. Then rotate your body towards the direction you want to go. If you are a natural, you will turn to the left. If you are a goofy, you will go to the right.
- As you reach the top of the wave, shift your weight back to the outside rail, moving your torso to help in transferring the weight.
- When you turn, shift your weight, stay centered, and then surf backside.
Shift your weight at the right time and use your arms to keep your balance. It may take some time before you can pull this off smoothly and gracefully. Practice and you will eventually be able to turn backside with ease.
