Surfing Skills & Techniques - Body & Board Positioning
In learning to surf, you will do the first few steps on the beach before doing them on the water. This will serve as your training ground as you get familiar with the different basic skills. One of the things you need to learn is positioning your body and Surfing Board correctly. This is an important step in catching waves. Having the right position will help improve board stability. This is also in preparation for the technique that every beginner wants to do - standing up on the Surfboard.
In this section, let’s start the learning process with the basic skill of positioning your body on the board:
- Place the Surfboard on the beach. Lie on your stomach, with your feet a few inches from the tail of the board. Do not lie too far forward, or the nose of the board will be submerged and you will be thrown over and fall off. On the other hand, you will be pushing against the water and fail to catch a wave if you are lying too far backward.
- Keep your weight centered in the middle of your board.
- Slide your hands back and hold the rails of the board below your chest, with your elbows up just like in a push-up position.
- Slightly lift your chest. Keep looking forward to maintain balance in the board.
Positioning your body on the board while on dry land is the first step in learning to surf. Once you’ve learned the correct position of your body on the board, you are now ready to try it on the water.

Instead of getting into the bad habit of grabbing the rail, I would suggest the student learn to place their hands flat on the deck of the surfboard when taking off.
Two really good reasons. 1. If you hit a "bald" spot where there is no wax, you can slip off and hit your chin on the deck. 2. By putting your hands into the water you are creating drag. This will slow you down at the most critical point of your ride, the take off.
