Surfing Types - Bodyboarding

Surfing Types - Bodyboarding Even before surfing the waves began, Bodyboarding has long since been enjoyed by people. The use of "Paipo," which refers to a small board, 4 feet or less in length, was long considered a pastime for children before progressing to traditional Surfing.

Bodyboarding is a form of wave riding using a Bodyboard or ‘sponge’ in Surfing jargon. Also called a boogie board, is shorter and wider than a Surfboard and is made of pliable foam-core. It was made on July 1971 by a surfer builder named Tom Morey. While in vacation in Hawaii, he was able to cut out some scrap polyethylene foam into a small rectangular mat using a newspaper as cover with an electric carving knife and a household iron. Dubbed as S.N.A.K.E. (side, navel, arm, knee, elbow), he trademarked it with the name Morey Boogie in 1973 for only $10.

Soon enough, the demand for his Surfing Boards increased and by 1977, he was producing almost 70,000 per year. The boards were affordable and the sport began to attract a lot of supporters.

The basic pieces of Surf Gear that you will need for Bodyboarding are Bodyboard, fins, and a Surfing Wetsuit. Many bodyboarders also wear a leash to attach themselves to the board, and flippers to assist with paddling out.

In contrast to Surfing, Bodyboarding is actually easier to learn. Moreover, in this sport, the board is ridden in lying or prone position. It can also be ridden in a half-standing stance or drop knee, which means that you ride it half-standing, with one knee touching the board or can even be ridden standing up.

Bodyboarding is much like Surfing: you paddle out behind the break and try to catch a good wave, and then ride it. Bodyboarding is a mix of style, speed, power, and performance. If you are already skilled, you can try out some tricks and maneuvers. But like Surfing, Bodyboarding can be a dangerous sport if precautions are not met. Seek proper training and equipment before attempting it.
