Surfing Skills & Techniques - Eskimo Roll
If you are using a Shortboard in Surfing and you need to get through waves, you can duck dive. But Duck Diving will be way more difficult to execute if you are using a Longboard. In this case, you can do the Eskimo Roll.
Also called the Turtle Roll, the Eskimo Roll is the skill of rolling the Surfing Board over, letting the wave pass, and rolling back to the water surface. This is an effective way of getting through big waves and whitewater if you are a beginner or if you are using a Longboard. Learn how to do the Eskimo Roll in this section:
- As the wave approaches, tightly grip the rails, about shoulder height.
- Roll the board over. Your body should be underneath your board.
- Let the waves pass over the top of your board while keeping a tight hold of the rails and pulling the board close to you. Hold your board tightly so the waves will not be able to sweep it away from you.
- Once the waves have passed over you, roll the board back over, climb on top of it, and continue paddling out. Notice that you are approximately in the same position where you started.
Just like Duck Diving, the Eskimo Roll is not an easy technique to do. It requires a lot of practice before you can pull it off correctly. Remember that while you are doing the roll, make sure to keep a tight hold of your board. A board that has been swept away from you may hurt other surfers and water users.
