Surfing Maneuvers - Frontside Bottom Turn
The Bottom Turn is one of the most essential maneuvers that you need to learn in Surfing. It is an essential aspect in improving your overall performance. You will also do a Bottom Turn every time you will do a maneuver, so getting it right is very important. You need maximum speed so the wave will not leave you behind, right timing, and proper weight transfer and distribution so you can maintain your speed and avoid falling off your board. All these factors are crucial in coming up with a smooth turn at the bottom of the wave. You can do the Bottom Turn either frontside or backside. In this section, let’s take a look at how to do the Frontside Bottom Turn:
- Catch a wave, get to your feet, and ride down its face with as much speed as possible.
- As you reach the bottom section of the wave called flats, bend your knees and lean forward. Do not lean too much, otherwise, you will lose your speed and fall off your board. Keep the pressure on the inside rail. At the same time, increase the pressure on your rear foot. Keep looking to where you want to go.
- After the turn, shift your weight to your rear foot and slightly extend your legs.
Go out into the water and practice doing this basic maneuver. If you are able to catch a wave with as much speed as you possibly can, ride the face of the wave, and shift your weight properly and at the right time, you will be able to make a smooth Frontside Bottom Turn and execute other maneuvers faster and in a stylish manner.
