Surfing Maneuvers - Frontside Floater
In Surfing, Floater refers to the maneuver which involves riding the lip of a breaking wave before falling down as it breaks. A Floater is usually done to finish a ride when the wave is closing out or to set the pace for your next move. In this maneuver, there are three crucial phases that you should pay close attention to: entering the lip, floating on the lip, and landing. You can do it either frontside or backside. In this section, let’s take a look at how the Frontside Floater is done:
- Initiate a Frontside Bottom Turn at an angle and in the middle of the wave.
- Ride up the face of the wave with as much speed as possible. Slightly twist your upper body towards the lip. When you reach the lip, shift your weight to your heel side.
- After ‘floating’ at the top of the whitewater, look over your shoulder and on the direction where you are headed. Come off the lip by pulling the nose down in the direction of the landing spot.
- Bend your knees as you ride down the face of the wave.
The Frontside Floater is a basic but difficult maneuver which requires a good Bottom Turn, balance, and proper weight distribution. Learn how to ride up the face of the wave towards the lip, float in the whitewater, and re-enter the face of the wave. Practice and improve your Surfing skills.
