Surfing Maneuvers - Frontside Turn

Surfing Maneuvers - Frontside Turn After mastering the basic Surfing Skills & Techniques, one of the first maneuvers that you can try is turning your board frontside and backside. In the Surfing world, frontside is facing the wave as you surf down the line. If you can do that, you might want to try doing a Frontside Turn. This maneuver is easy to do, provided you know how and when to shift your weight from your rear foot to the front. Learn how to do the Frontside Turn in this section:

  1. As you ride the wave and when you are ready to turn, shift your weight to your rear foot and bend your back knee. This will slightly raise the nose of the board.

  2. Lean and rotate your body towards the direction of the wave. If you are natural-footed (left foot forward, right foot at the rear), twist to the right. If you are goofy-footed (right foot at the front, left foot at the rear), rotate your body to the left.

  3. Lean forward and shift your weight to your front foot.

  4. Bring your weight back to the middle of the board.

Shifting your weight at the right time is an integral part of the Frontside Turn. Keep on practicing until you get the hang of it. Eventually, you will be able to pull this off gracefully. After this, you can try the Backside Turn.
