Surfing Skills & Techniques - Lining Up
Line up refers to the location where the wave breaks. You would know that it is a line up if there are many experienced surfers who are in the surf break, sitting and waiting to catch a wave. Having the correct position in the line up will mean opportunities to ride waves.
Every surfer should deal with the line up properly to avoid any unnecessary arguments with other surfers. In this section, know the ideal position in a line up and learn how to maintain order in an area where skilled surfers congregate:
- Check out the line up before you get in. Determine where you should be in and find out how you can get there without getting in other surfers’ way.
- Paddle to the bottom of the line up, gradually approaching the top. Be aware of other surfers who got there first.
- The surfer who is closest to the peak of the wave has priority.
- When paddling out, make sure to steer clear of the incoming surfers who are riding the waves.
Lining up should be an orderly affair for surfers of all abilities. Maintain a cool head and follow the Surfing Rules & Etiquette. Surfing is a fun sport for everybody, so do your part in keeping it as it is.
