Longboard Surfing
As the name suggests, Longboard Surfing makes use of a Longboard.
The Longboard’s average length is eight to fourteen feet. Also known as the Malibu Board, it is generally taller than an average surfer by three feet. Mere length isn’t what makes a Longboard different from a common Surfboard. The former has more buoyancy and planing surface that would make riding even small waves easy for you - something that is almost impossible to achieve with your favorite seven-foot board. That is why Longboards are usually used by beginners.
Both beginners and advanced surfers can make use of Longboards. If you’re a beginner, you would do better with a longer board. Because of its greater size, it can catch more waves both big and small. Advanced surfers, on the other hand, can show off their skills as Longboards allow them to do different stunts.
From the classic model, Longboards have evolved through the years, not only in length and style but also in the materials they are made of. Today’s Longboards are made of polyurethane foam and fiberglass design, allowing less drag on the waves. Present Longboard designs include the Tri-fin, the Gun, and the 2+1.
As the name implies, a Tri-fin has three fins at the tail of the Surfboard instead of the normal single fin. This feature allows easier turns and better thrusts in the water.
The Gun is one of the most recent additions to the Longboard family. Its teardrop shape layout allows you to pierce into waves, that’s why this board is also known as "the big wave board". It’s usually nine to twelve feet in length and gives you more paddling capabilities before catching a wave.
The 2+1 is said to be the most versatile Longboard model. It is sometimes called "the single fin with training wheels" because of its classic single-fin design plus the strength and drive of a tri-fin which offers greater maneuverability.
When it comes to the price, Longboards tend to be a little more expensive compared to normal Surfboards. When buying a Longboard, make sure to know its different types first. Try several boards to determine which type fits your Surfing abilities.
If you are a beginner, the use of a Longboard is your first step in learning the basics of Surfing. Know what type of Longboard suits you and learn how to use it. After mastering the sport with a Longboard, you may eventually be allowed to use a Shortboard.
