Surfing Skills & Techniques - Standing on the Surfboard (on the beach)
This is one of the things that every beginner looks forward to – standing on the Surfing Board. This technique is the final (and the hardest) step in learning the basics of Surfing. You will combine everything you have learned, from achieving the correct position of your body and board, to lining up and catching your first wave.
It is not easy to stand up on a Surfboard, above the constantly moving waves. So before you head out to sea, practice this technique on the beach (or on dry land) first. This will prepare you for the real thing. Here’s how to do it:
- Determine your Surfing stance. You are either natural or goofy. Find the stance in which you feel more comfortable. You are a natural if you put your left foot forward; a goofy if you move your right foot forward.
- Lay your board (without the Surfboard Fins) on a flat surface.
- Lie on the board in paddling position. You should be not too far forward or far back.
- Hold the rails and slide your hands back, almost at shoulder level.
- Extend your arms and push your body up, as if you are doing some push-ups.
- Bring your body in the crouching position. If you are natural footed, move your left foot forward. If you are goofy footed, move your right foot forward. Bring your front knee under your face.
- Stand up slowly, keeping your feet in the correct stance and your knees bent. Put your arms out to help maintain balance. Keep looking forward and your weight centered.
This is the easy part in learning to stand up on your board. Once you get comfortable with the correct Surfing stance and position, you are ready to take it to the next level, standing up on your board out in the open water.
In learning to surf, it is wise to take Surfing lessons from a reputable Surf school to make the learning process easier. This will also ensure that you will have a good groundwork of the basic skills and techniques.
