Surfing Skills & Techniques - Standing on the Surfboard (in the water)
The long wait is over. You have reached the final stage of learning the basics of Surfing – the pop-up. This is where you will combine everything that you have learned. You have done it on dry land; now it’s time to test if you have learned enough to ride the waves. This section covers the steps on how to stand on your Surfing Board – out in the water:
- Paddle out for a wave.
- If you feel that the wave picks the board up, arch your back and hold the rails as if you are doing some push-ups.
- With your palms flat on the board, extend your arms and push your body up.
- Bring your body in the crouching position. Move your feet to the correct Surfing stance: the forward foot is positioned underneath your chin, while your back foot is around shoulders’ width away from the leading foot.
- Stand up slowly, keeping your feet in the correct stance and your knees bent. Put your arms out to help maintain balance. Keep looking forward and your weight centered.
Standing on the Surfboard as you ride the waves is an exhilarating experience. As a popular saying goes, ‘only a surfer knows the feeling’. If you pull it off correctly, you will realize that all your efforts paid off. Happy Surfing!
Reminder: Nothing beats a formal Surfing lesson. Make sure to take lessons from a reputable surf school so you will be able to learn quickly and you will have a good foundation of the basic skills and techniques. Moreover, your instructor can assist you in case you encounter any difficulty.
