Surfing Gear & Equipment - Surfing Clothing
Surfing can be done in open water, under different types of weather and water temperature. This is enough indication that you need to wear specific types of clothes which can protect you against Hypothermia and at the same time, provide the comfort that you need as you ride the waves. In this section, know the different kinds of clothes which are suitable for Surfing, and get some tips that will help you decide what to wear:
- Weather plays a big role in determining the type of clothes you need to wear. For instance, warm weather calls for surf trunks, board shorts, and one-piece bathing suits. Make sure that what you are wearing stays on even during a Surfing Wipeout. In addition, your clothes should not restrict your movements. Otherwise, you’ll get muscle strain after surfing.
- During cold weather and in cold water conditions, wear a Surfing Wetsuit, also called a wettie. Made of synthetic material called neoprene, a wetsuit can keep you warm and protect you from Hypothermia by trapping a thin layer of water near your body, which gets warmed up by the body heat. Make sure it fits snugly. This type of clothing comes in different sizes and designs. It can be a spring suit or long john. Wear the type of wetsuit that is suitable for the water conditions that you will be surfing in.
- You can also wear a rash vest under a wetsuit to keep the wetsuit seams from rubbing.
- In cold climates, wear wetsuit boots, gloves, and a hood or helmet to retain body heat.
- Sunscreen is very important, especially on an activity like Surfing in which your body is exposed to the sun most of the time. Sun’s rays reflected on the water can really damage your skin. Make sure to apply liberal amounts of waterproof sunscreen with a high SPF before heading out and as needed. One important thing to keep in mind is that application of sunscreen is necessary not only on sunny weather but also on days with cloudy skies.
- A day of Surfing does not necessarily mean that you are on the water at all times. Bring clothes that you can wear while resting on the beach. Don a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and head from the sun’s harmful rays. Wear a pair of good sunglasses so your vision will not be impaired and your eyes are well-protected.
Consider comfort and functionality when choosing clothes for Surfing. In addition, the surf spot and the water temperature are also good indicators of what you should be wearing. Stay warm and comfortable, have fun, and always aim for some Safe Surfing action!
