Surfing Pioneer Honored at Seaside Ceremony
MONDAY, 26 NOVEMBER 2007
Family, friends, and admirers bid goodbye to surfing pioneer and sportsman Gaulden Reed while his ashes were scattered in the Atlantic Ocean at SunSplash Park Friday afternoon.
Reed’s grandson Renny Herrero and great-granddaughter Isabella Herrero scattered Reed’s remains into the sea while many admirers watched along the side.
There were four surfers, including local champion Mimi Munro, who paddled into the water with their surfboards to honor Reed. There were also four planes which flew overhead the surfers and performed the missing man formation.
Reed, 89, was a pioneer of surfing in Volusia County - his native land. He died of cancer on Nov. 6.
