Steel Pier Classic & Surf Art Expo Set for May
WEDNESDAY, 23 APRIL 2008
The Virginia Longboard Federation (VLF) is pleased to announce the 5th Annual Steel Pier Classic and Surf Art Expo to take place on Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-26, 2008) at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, First Street Jetty, presented by Freedom Surf Shop. This annual charity event will once again raise money for The Virginia Beach Noblemen to benefit underprivileged children in the Hampton Roads community. This three-day event will celebrate the roots of surfing and will feature Longboard and Shortboard Pro divisions with a cash purse along with all amateur divisions, and new this year... stand up paddle.
Surfing legend Robert August will be at the contest to support the event and to promote his new wine label "Robert August Wines". Over 300 surfers from all over the United States are expected to attend. In honor of our Fallen Soldiers killed in combat, the VLF will have a true Hawaiian Paddle out at noon on Monday, May 26th. The local Military community will be joining the surfers to honor those heroes' memory. It is sure to be a memorable and moving tribute. The VLF, who are "Partners in Education" with the City of Virginia Beach, will once again feature the Student Art Show on the Beach. Local area High School Students will be competing for first place in this annual show.
Students from Princess Anne High School along with the VLF will produce the show. The VLF has taken the art show concept up a notch and have partnered with local agency Sponsorships Unlimited to produce the Surf Art Expo along the boardwalk. The memory of former Virginian Pilot Sports Writer, Danielle Roach, will be honored at the awards ceremony again this year with the presentation of the "Danielle Roach Sportsmanship Award".
To enter the surfing contest, applications are available at Freedom Surf Shop, 1361 Laskin Road, Va. Beach. Surf contest applications can also be downloaded at www.virginialongboardfederation.com.
